A Brief History

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Sulphur, Louisiana began when 13 families met in September, 1950, to discuss the viability of an Episcopal mission. Following the meeting, the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, Girault Jones, sent Father Fred Kneipp to Sulphur to organize the mission. The inaugural service was held at the Sulphur American Legion Hall on September 3, 1950. The name of Holy Trinity was adopted during a church supper held at the Methodist Church annex on September 21. The application for mission status was approved by Bishop Jones on November 26, 1950, and on January 25, 1951, the application was accepted at the diocesan convention held in Alexandria.
Church services continued to be held at the American Legion Hall until September 16, 1951, when services were moved to the recreation hall at the Sulphur Mines. Primarily through the efforts of Mr. G. Locke Paret, Sr., Holy Trinity was gifted 10 acres of land on the corner of Beglis Parkway and Maplewood Drive. The present church facility, located at 1700 Maplewood Drive, held its first service on March 16, 1952, and has continued to minister to the Sulphur community to the present time.
